Two teens in Albany charged with gun possession

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A 17-year-old and a 13-year-old were arrested in Albany on Tuesday following an investigation into a menacing incident involving a firearm, according to Albany Police. The two teens are both facing multiple charges.

On July 9 at 1:25 p.m., police arrived at Albany County Probation Services on South Pearl Street following reports of someone brandishing a weapon. Arriving officers learned that a 13-year-old boy had allegedly threatened multiple people with a handgun during a dispute outside the Probation Services building.

The child reportedly fled the scene with another person before law enforcement arrived. During the ensuing investigation, police determined that another minor had given the 13-year-old the gun.

Officers located a child matching the description of the 13-year-old near South Pearl Street and Beaver Street. He was taken into custody in a State Street parking garage after a brief pursuit.

Following a search of the area, a loaded revolver was found inside the parking garage, which had been reported stolen out of South Carolina. Albany Police were then able to locate the 17-year-old who originally possessed the revolver near Morton Avenue and Clinton Street and arrested him.

Police say the children's names will not be released due to their age. The minors now face the following charges:

17-year-old

  • Second-degree criminal possession of a weapon
  • Criminal sale of a firearm to a minor
  • Fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property

13-year-old

  • Second-degree criminal possession of a weapon
  • Fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property
  • Four counts of second-degree menacing

Both minors were arraigned on Tuesday afternoon before being remanded to the Capital District Juvenile Secure Detention Facility.
