2024 Emmy Experts predict Best Variety Talk Series: ‘The Late Show’ and ‘The Daily Show’ are tied

Having trouble predicting what will win Best Variety Talk Series at the upcoming Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s 2024 Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their predictions, and they are evenly tied between CBS’s “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show.” The other two potential nominees, per the Experts’ current racetrack odds, are Netflix’s “John Mulaney Presents Everybody’s in L.A.” and ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

As of this writing, three out of our eight Emmy Experts predict a victory for “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”: Ben Travers (Indiewire), Jazz Tangcay (Variety) and Matt Roush (TV Guide Magazine). Stephen Colbert is a 10-time Emmy winner for his work on “Stephen Colbert’s Election Night 2020,” “The Colbert Report” and “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart.” However, it’s notable that he has never won a trophy for “The Late Show” … until now?

Three other Emmyologists — Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby) and Susan King (Gold Derby) — instead believe “The Daily Show” will prevail. Jon Stewart returned to the desk this year after almost a decade away, and he now shares hosting duties with the show’s various correspondents. “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” previously won this award 11 times, the last time in 2015, while “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” prevailed last year for Trevor Noah‘s final season.

The remaining pair of pundits — Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby) and Clayton Davis (Variety) — are going with “John Mulaney Presents Everybody’s in L.A.” This brand new show aired only six episodes in May of 2024, with host John Mulaney interviewing guests and starring in pre-taped sketches. He is a prior three-time Emmy champion thanks to “John Mulaney: Baby J,” “John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous At Radio City” and “Saturday Night Live.”

Also looking strong in our Experts’ rankings is “Jimmy Kimmel Live.” The long-running chat program has received 12 nominations in this race but has yet to prevail. Meanwhile, Jimmy Kimmel‘s star continues to rise as he has now hosted the Oscars four times. He currently has two Emmys on his mantel for producing “Live In Front Of A Studio Audience.”

Some of the most recent Emmy winners in the Best Variety Talk Series category include “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah” in 2023 and “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” in 2022-16 (it switched categories to Best Variety Scripted Series last year). Find out who will be in the running to join this esteemed list when the Primetime Emmy nominations are announced on July 17, 2024.
