Huma Abedin, Alex Soros engaged

Huma Abedin, a longtime aide of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and Alex Soros, the son of progressive billionaire George Soros, are engaged, the couple announced Wednesday in a joint Instagram post.

“[T]his happened…we couldn’t be happier, more grateful, or more in love,” the younger Soros commented on the post, followed by emojis including what appears to be a diamond ring.

The post featured a photo of what appears to be Soros on one knee in front of Abedin. 

Alex Soros is the chair of Open Society Foundations, which his father, the founder, once controlled. The elder Soros has been at the heart of right-wing conspiracy theories for years, facing accusations, including one recently from Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), that he has funded groups involved in pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses.

Abedin started her career in Washington as a White House intern in the first lady’s office, later going alongside Clinton to the Senate, State Department and campaign trail. 

Abedin was formerly married to ex-Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) and stayed by his side as he faced numerous scandals, but filed for divorce from him in the wake of the FBI finding her emails on Weiner’s laptop, resulting in then-FBI director James Comey to reopen an investigation into Clinton’s emails shortly prior to the 2020 presidential election.
