Reliever Reed Garrett was placed on the injured list as part of a flurry of bullpen transactions the Mets made on Wednesday.

The Mets also activated right-hander Phil Maton, who they acquired in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday. They recalled left-hander Danny Young from Triple-A Syracuse, while optioning rookie Eric Orze back down.

Garrett was placed on the 15-day IL with right elbow inflammation, the Mets announced. Garrett had a tremendous April in what’s been a breakout season for him, though he struggled in May and has an 8.44 ERA over his last seven outings. He’s coming off a rough outing on Tuesday, when he surrendered three runs in 2/3 of an inning. His season ERA sits at 3.64.

Maton should be a solid addition to shore up the bullpen, especially with Garrett out and Drew Smith done for the season. He posted a 4.58 ERA in 40 games for the Rays this year. He was much better last year, with a 3.00 ERA and 10.1. K/9 in 68 appearances. The 31-year-old has a career 4.28 ERA and 10.1 K/9 in eight big league seasons.

Young, meanwhile, has been back and forth a few times with the Mets this year. In 13 major league games, he’s posted a 5.11 ERA with 16 strikeouts in 12 1/3 innings. Down in Syracuse, he’s allowed just two runs and struck out 22 in 14 1/3 innings.

Orze had a tough MLB debut on Monday, entering in a tight spot and allowing three runs without recording an out. It was a long road to get to the majors for the two-time cancer survivor. He’s having a strong year for Syracuse, with a 3.76 ERA, 13.2 K/9 and .209 opponents batting average in 38 1/3 innings.

He’ll almost certainly be back at some point as the Mets’ bullpen carousel keeps spinning.
