Seattle’s outfield depth too is strained.

The Seattle Mariners announced they’ve placed OF Dominic Canzone on the 10-day injured list with a right adductor strain, recalling OF Jonatan Clase from Triple-A Tacoma to take his place. The thigh/groin injury curtails what’s been a frustrating season for the 26 year old, whose red hot start was halted by a sprain to his left AC joint in mid-April, as he’d run a .219/.286/.531 line with a 130 wRC+ in the season’s first three weeks. It’s not looked right for Canzone since, returning a month later to post a .209/.290/.355 and an 84 wRC+. Adductor strains can vary from a few weeks to a few months depending on the Grade, which we will likely learn more on soon.

Clase returns following a month back in Tacoma wherein he continued to perform at a healthy level. He’s apace for a 20/50 season if given the rest of the year in the Pacific Coast League, but his challenge will be finding a niche in the M’s lineup in the coming weeks. His better offensive side is from the left, which gives him a chance to start more often alongside Luke Raley in the outfield, but his switch-hitting is weaker still from the right side, an unfortunate hole given the opening created by Mitch Haniger’s struggles. Still, Clase should get some starts against righties, as well as of course the opportunity to pinch run late in games.
