Heat not looking to trade Jimmy Butler for now

Butler originally wanted an extension from the Heat this summer, but then changed his mind after Miami did not offer one. He now intends to play out this season and not sign an extension with any team and will become a free agent in the summer of 2025. The Heat is not shopping Butler, according to a source.

More on this storyline

Burks, who was drafted by the Utah Jazz with the 12th overall pick in 2011, scored 20 or more points in nine games and made five or more threes in seven games last season (including the playoffs). “I think I can space the floor,” Burks said of how his game fits alongside the Heat’s leading trio of Bam Adebayo, Jimmy Butler and Tyler Herro. “All three of them are very elite. So I think I can just play my role and help out any way I can and just play off them.” -via Miami Herald / July 8, 2024
Based on everything we’ve heard up until now, Butler would prefer to sign a long-term deal next summer and finish his career in Miami rather than go elsewhere. It would be a great way to tie a bow on his final years as a pro and solidify him among the most beloved Heat players to wear the uniform. If so, he must prove he can remain on the court and avoid the off-court jousting with higher-ups that spoiled his relationship with his previous three teams. He’s missed 99 regular season games in the five seasons he’s been with the Heat. Even amid this successful five-year run, there have always been whispers about Butler’s antics away from the court — good-natured or not — and how much the Heat would tolerate them if they weren’t winning. -via New York Times / June 28, 2024
Anthony Chiang: After entering offseason wanting a max extension, a league source confirms Jimmy Butler now intends to bypass extension request this summer. Instead, Butler plans to play out next season with Heat under current contract before making a decision on his opt-out next offseason. -via Twitter @Anthony_Chiang / June 26, 2024
