Authorities have closed between Observatory Road and North Road on the opposite side of the bridge.

Thousands of drivers travelling into Bristol who use that bridge will have to find alternative routes to get into the city.

There is already considerable traffic building on the A4 Portway which is another major road into the city, according to traffic data from Google.

Traffic is also at a standstill back towards the A369 coming into Bristol from Leigh Woods to Ashton Gate Stadium.

The closure began at 6.30am after officers responded to an emergency incident.

Traffic monitor Inrix said: “Due to a police incident, the bridge and visitor centre are closed all day today (July 11) to all traffic and pedestrians.

“We apologise for the disruption.”

There was a collision on the alternative route which had led to long ques building on Rownham Hill.

However, the accident has been cleared and traffic on the road has begun to ease, according to Bristol Live.

Major road works can severely disrupt travellers’ journeys if they don’t plan.

A new £2.2billion road tunnel which links East London to Greenwich Pensiula was being built in the Blackwall Tunnel.

The 0.9 mile (1.4km) river crossing is planned to open next year and will link Silvertown, in Newham, to the peninsula in south-east London.

Work to complete the final road layout will see the southbound section of the Blackwall Tunnel closed on 20-22 July.

More disruption is then expected next month as it will then close again on 17-19 August.

Motorists are advised to plan ahead and take a different route, during the closures.

Each Saturday, the closures will begin at midnight, with the southbound traffic restored by 5am each Monday at the latest.

The forthcoming closures are the latest in a series, with the most recent ones taking place last month.

It comes after a major motorway closed for a weekend sparking severe travel chaos.

And these drivers were facing a 70-mile diversion after it was announced a major UK road would close all week.
