Trey Murphy on Brandon Ingram trade rumors: 'It’s tough, and it’s also a part of the business'

What goes through your mind when you see Brandon Ingram’s name in trade rumors? Trey Murphy: It’s tough, and it’s also a part of the business. Brandon’s been unbelievable when it comes to being a role model, seeing how he works on a daily basis. He’s always been there for me and coached me up. He does all the little things. I work out with him and spend time with him off the court. It’s tough to potentially lose a brother like that, but it’s part of the business, and sometimes it might be what’s best for him. You never know what it is, but you’ve always got to make sure that he looks out for his best interests at the end of the day because that’s how it is.

So… it doesn’t seem like anyone really wants to trade for Brandon Ingram.
I wrote about why, and I think it boils down to one thing: the new CBA has forced teams to re-evaluate who deserves a max contract and players haven’t quite adjusted to that yet.

Brandon Ingram continues to seek a contract extension reaching $200+ million, per @WindhorstESPN on @ESPNCleveland.
The Pelicans have been unwilling to go that number in negotiations, and there doesn’t appear to be much interest elsewhere for Ingram at that figure. pic.twitter.com/Y4uP9qcZBn7:52 PM

If teams are unwilling to value Brandon Ingram, what’s the urgency to trade him or award him an extension?
Just let Ingram play out his contract for the season (or trade at the deadline given circumstances) and move forward.
I don’t understand the thirst for a transaction. – 1:01 PM

It’s been more than a week since the start of free agency and the Pelicans still haven’t figured out what the future holds for Brandon Ingram.

More on this storyline

Will Guillory: Dejounte Murray said he’s been in communication with Brandon Ingram this offseason. He said Ingram called him the morning of the trade and asked if he thought the deal was going through. -via Twitter @WillGuillory / July 9, 2024
How much does a healthy Zion Williamson swing the pendulum for the team? Trey Murphy: You get to see what a generational talent looks like with a healthy team. That’s the biggest thing. We’ve got to be healthy. That’s always been our thing for my entire time in New Orleans. If we have a healthy team, I think we can make a deep run. -via HoopsHype / July 11, 2024
What are your thoughts on what the Pelicans can do as a team next season with Dejounte Murray? Trey Murphy: We’ve got a lot of weapons, and we already had a lot. We’ve got even more weapons now. We obviously lost a lot of key guys we had on last year’s team, like Naji Marshall, Dyson Daniels, and Larry Nance Jr. We’re going to miss their presence a lot. But I definitely think we’re going to do a lot of stuff with the team we have now, and I’m sure we’re not even done with our roster construction. -via HoopsHype / July 11, 2024
