Ballston Spa warns residents of fake police scam

BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Residents of Ballston Spa are warned of an ongoing scam, where scammers send out a letter soliciting donations to an organization with no connection to Ballston Spa Police, despite a reference to "Ballston Spa Area Police Officers." Authorities say money provided will not reach the Village or Police Department.

Mayor Frank Rossi tells NEWS10 that an older gentleman came by Ballston Spa Police to provide money, believing the letter was from a legitimate campaign. Rossi says police were perplexed by the act, wondering why he was bringing money in for them.

Residents are reminded that if there is any doubt regarding letters or campaigns such as this, to assume it is a scam and check with their local agencies to ensure they're aware.
