Jared Dudley caused a bit of a stir but he clarified later that he’s happy for his former teammate Redick

As JJ Redick settles in as the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, the controversy over his ascent to one of the true glamour jobs in the NBA is settling down a bit. There’s still some of that but not as much as the day he was hired. Take Jared Dudley.

The former Boston College Eagle made some comments that were taken as a shot at Redick, saying that “I want to head coach, that’s my dream. … Some of us aren’t JJ Redick and get to go right away.”

It wasn’t necessarily a shot though. He pointed out afterwards on X that he had been a Redick teammate with the Clippers and he really liked Redick personally. “I want to head coach, that’s my dream. … Some of us aren’t JJ Redick and get to go right away.”

You can easily appreciate his frustration. It took us awhile to realize just what a smart player Dudley was. He’d be on our short list for sure. He has a great basketball mind.

Currently a Dallas assistant, he just saw Redick hire one of his colleagues as Greg St. Jean is moving to the Lakers.

And in another encouraging development, Blake Hinson, Pitt’s hot-shooting forward, says that he signed with L.A. for two reasons: to learn from Redick and to play with LeBron James.

It’s not that he’s destined to be a great player; he’s probably not. But he has confidence that Redick can teach him and that in and of itself is pretty cool.
