SETTING THE RECORD SKINCARE RECORD STRAIGHT

Lucrezia Del Papa, co-founder of olive oil-based skincare brand Olivella, shares her tips for reducing the signs of aging.

Forget pouring olive oil on bread, she wants you to use the ingredient for battling fine lines and wrinkles.

She especially wants to dispel a popular myth about using olive oil on certain skin types.

“Olive oil skin care is not good for oily skin: Fake! It is not true that olive oil products are unsuitable for oily skin,” she told The U.S. Sun.

“They have the same moisturizing and anti-aging properties for all skin types, from extremely sensitive and thin to thicker skin,” she continued.

“Olive oil products are well tolerated by younger skin and have always been used for cleansing infants.

“Mature skin benefits from the regenerative power of olive oil, which is also known for soothing redness and promoting wound healing.”

OLIVE OIL ALL OVER

She explained how the more olive oil you use, the younger you will look.

“Olive oil provides several anti-aging benefits. It protects the skin from external agents by forming a protective barrier that shields the skin, preventing photoaging,” she said.

“It also has excellent moisturizing action, retaining water within the subcutaneous tissues, which keeps the skin hydrated and supple, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles,” she added.

“Additionally, olive oil is rich in antioxidants, which neutralize free radicals, preventing cellular damage and premature aging.”

She explained how compounds such as polyphenols and Vitamin E protect the skin from oxidative damage, preserving its youthful appearance and improving overall skin health.

The hydroxytyrosol from oil oil also has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce both inflammation and irritation in the skin.

“Chronic inflammation can accelerate the aging process and damage the skin’s barrier function, so the anti-inflammatory effects of hydroxytyrosol may help keep skin looking youthful and healthy,” she said.

“By neutralizing free radicals, hydroxytyrosol helps maintain skin elasticity and firmness. It also supports collagen production, which is crucial for keeping the skin’s structure intact.”

SMOOTH ‘N SOFT

She also shared how olive oil is beneficial for promoting healthy skin.

“In the field of cosmetics, research shows that active ingredients in virgin olive oil can act selectively by retaining water and forming a protective and elastic film on the skin’s surface,” she said.

It is composed of a complex mixture of fatty acids and vitamins.

“Thanks to this combination of active ingredients, we can confidently say that olive oil nourishes, protects, tones, and makes the skin more elastic, playing an anti-aging role,” she said.

TAKE A SHOT

She also wants you to swap out your morning cup of coffee with this – a shot of premium extra virgin olive oil.

“It helps the guts and nourishes the body from the inside out. The antioxidants in EVOO, such as hydroxytyrosol, may help support collagen production in the skin,” she said.

“Collagen is essential for skin elasticity and firmness, and maintaining healthy levels of collagen can contribute to a youthful, radiant complexion,” she continued.

“Premium Extra Virgin Olive Oil is abundant in antioxidants, particularly polyphenols and vitamin E, which help protect the skin from oxidative stress caused by free radicals.

“By reducing oxidative damage, EVOO consumption may help maintain the skin’s youthful appearance and protect against signs of aging such as wrinkles and fine lines.”

Her other tips include cleansing your face with a natural moisturizing product, such as her brand’s Olivella soaps, which are made from the saponification of oil.

“The main ingredient is ‘Sodium Olivate’ – a mixture of hydroxide salts obtained from virgin olive oil, rich in fatty acids. Olive Oil soap can also be made at home with a lengthy process,” she said.

“Moisturize with a few drops of highly purified olive oil – Olivella Moisturizer Oil or use an oil/serum like Olivella Olitox Lift Face Oil, enriched according to your age and skin hydration status.”

She also recommends using a hydrating face cream, as well as an eye contour cream, for additional nourishment and protection.
