Volunteers lead beach clean-ups

“Wish you were clean” is a phrase all too familiar for beachgoers in Cyprus, a country where clean coasts are rarer than rain.

Volunteers are turning wishes into reality, however, with this summer’s “Wish you were clean” campaign, which has planned 4 beach clean-ups across Cyprus.

The campaign aims not only to remove waste from the beaches, but also to raise awareness about the hazards of coastal pollution. Plastic waste harms marine ecosystems and human health.

Environmental organisations, including The Ecological Movement of Cyprus and Environmental Youth, are the coordinators of the campaign.

The next clean-up is set for Sunday, July 14 at 9.00am at Sirens Beach in Ayia Thekla. The first of the series took place at Careta Beach on June 30th.

The final two clean-ups will occur in late August, with Lady’s Mile on August 25 and Lara Beach on August 30.

Volunteers are fully responsible for the clean-ups. The motivation for their work? “Respect for nature and the joy we receive when we contribute to the environment.”
