Part of I-70 to close in Topeka for viaduct work

TOPEKA (KSNT) - State transportation officials plan to part of I-70 in downtown Topeka this weekend as part of the ongoing Polk-Quincy Viaduct project.

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) announced in a press release Thursday, July 11 that westbound I-70 from Southeast Adams Street to Topeka Boulevard will be closed this weekend. The closure starts at 11 p.m. on Friday, July 12 and is expected to last until midnight on Sunday, July 14.

KDOT spokeswoman Kate Craft said the Southeast Adams Street exit will be the last one open for drivers to exit westbound I-70. Traffic will be given detours south to I-470 or north to K-4, then to U.S. 24 and on to U.S. 75. Drivers can also follow a local street detour on Southeast Adams Street, 10th Avenue and Topeka Boulevard to the First Street I-70 on-ramp.

The eastbound lanes of I-70 will not be impacted by road work this weekend. However, more I-70 closures may come if additional patching work is needed on the viaduct. KDOT will work with local city officials to schedule and close areas, providing information when necessary.

Craft said both east and westbound lanes of I-70 through the Polk-Quincy Viaduct will remain at one lane until construction on the viaduct is complete. To learn more about work on the viaduct, click here.
