Chelsea pull out of race to sign Atletico’s Samu Omorodion

Chelsea have withdrawn themselves from the race to sign Atletico Madrid centre-forward Samu Omorodion, according to Marca.

The Blues are tired of pressing forward for the 20-year-old and have decided to pull out of the race for his signature.

Chelsea had lodged an offer of €33 million for Omorodion, with another €7m set to come Atletico’s way in achievable bonuses and add-ons.

However, Los Colchoneros have remained adamant that they are not open to selling except a massive bid comes their way.

Atletico manager Diego Simeone does not want to lose the Spanish youth international, especially with Alvaro Morata having one foot out of the door (the former Chelsea striker is seemingly on his way to AC Milan).

Omorodion impressed at Alaves last term with his hold-up play, athleticism, and high volume of shots taken from excellent positions.

The overall output was a meagre nine goals (19 big chances missed) in 35 La Liga appearances, but his underlying numbers are more promising.

Chelsea have shown a willingness to sign inexperienced players and nurture them. The Blues planned to develop Omorodion alongside Jackson, but the La Liga giants refused to play ball.

Per the report, Chelsea want to turn to more mature centre-forwards, with Karim Adeyemi and Jonathan David on the club’s shortlist.

Atletico Madrid’s decision to hold on to Omorodion is a blessing for the Blues, considering what the club needs to be after in the market.

Chelsea already have an unpolished gem of a striker. Why add another to the mix when the club harbours ambitions of returning to the Champions League?

The West Londoners should be in the market for an experienced, proficient, and proven striker to lead the line ahead of Jackson.

The decision to pursue Omorodion was not the wisest course of action, and thankfully, Atletico have prevented Chelsea from shooting themselves in the foot.
