However, he is free to return to action from August 27 and could feature against Tottenham five days later.

Ahead of his comeback, Newcastle shared footage of Tonali’s return to training on social media.

Footage from the club’s Darsley Park base shows the 24-year-old hugging staff and speaking to the coaching team.

He also used an exercise bike and lifted weights in the gym before heading onto the pitch for a fitness drill.

Joelinton was also pictured with Tonali during Newcastle’s first day of pre-season.

Alongside the video, the club wrote: “Sandro ole, ole, ole…”

Tonali was slapped with a ten-month ban by the Italian FA last October for illegal betting.

The suspension ruled him out of Euro 2024, where Italy were eliminated by Switzerland in the last 16.

Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli was also handed a seven-month ban as part of the scandal.

Meanwhile, Tonali underwent rehab treatment for eight months alongside his ban from football.

His ban came just three months after he signed for Newcastle from AC Milan in a club-record £60million deal.

Prior to being suspended, Tonali scored once in 12 appearances for Eddie Howe’s side.

In his absence, the Magpies went on to finish seventh in the Premier League, only missing out on Europe after Manchester United won the FA Cup.
