'Game of Thrones' star Emilia Clarke joins cast of Portland-filmed series

The show began filming in Portland on June 10, according to co-creator and executive producer Sean Phillips.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The actress once known for portraying the Mother of Dragons will have a starring role in a Portland-filmed crime series.

On Wednesday, Variety announced that former “Game of Thrones” star Emilia Clarke has joined the cast of “Criminal” — the Amazon Prime Video series that’s already begun production in Portland.

The show is based on writer Ed Brubaker and illustrator Sean Phillips’ graphic novels of the same name. Their comic series follows characters who are involved in organized crime.

Variety reported that Clarke will portray Mallory, “a slick and daring armed robber, as quick with a gun as she is with her wits. Part of a heist crew with Ricky Lawless [Gus Halper], who she’s in a passionate Bonnie-and-Clyde-like affair with. Mallory is a woman on the edge, living on the wrong side of the law and hiding secrets that will bring her and her entire crew into the danger zone.”

In the actress’ most popular show “Game of Thrones,” she took on the role of Daenerys Targaryen, commonly referred to as Khaleesi. The series lasted for eight seasons and has since spawned HBO’s hit spin-off “House of the Dragon.”

Although Clarke never won an Emmy Award for her role, she received several nominations as an outstanding lead and supporting actress in the drama series.

She will act alongside former “Sons of Anarchy” star Charlie Hunnam, who was announced as a protagonist earlier this year. Hunnam will portray a master thief named Leo.

Other cast members include Logan Browning from “Dear White People,” Richard Jenkins from “DAHMER-Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” and Adria Arjona from “Hit Man.”

The show began filming in Portland on June 12, according to a social media post from co-creator and executive producer Sean Phillips.

The city will also serve as the backdrop for “The Night Always Comes,” a film starring “The Crown” actress Vanessa Kirby.
