Washington shelter rescues 9 dogs from alleged dog-fighting ring

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Nine dogs were given a second chance with the Humane Society for Southwest Washington (HSSW) on Monday after being rescued from an alleged dog-fighting ring in New Jersey.

The four puppies and five adults were found in dire conditions, including barren pens, cold rain and heavy chains. Many also had scarring and untreated wounds.

“Cases like this are heartbreaking and illustrate the exceptional cruelty of dog fighting,” says Sam Ellingson, HSSW's Director of Communications. “But thanks to the agencies who coordinated this rescue, these dogs will have a bright future and find the loving homes they deserve. We’re grateful for the opportunity to help.”

Despite all they went through, HSSW said the dogs greeted humane society workers with wagging tails, licking hands through the kennel doors.

While HSSW believes the dogs will be ready for adoption soon, they're currently working to provide the nurturing environment they need before they find their forever homes.

Once available for adoption, the dogs can be seen on HSSW's site.

In total, the rescue efforts from this operation - conducted by the Humane Society for the United States - have saved 120 dogs from multiple properties.
