Rensselaer man pleads guilty to gun possession

A Rensselaer man pleaded guilty in Saratoga County Court on Wednesday to second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

BALLSTON SPA, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- A Rensselaer man pleaded guilty in Saratoga County Court on Wednesday to second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Court officials said Thomas McCall, 35, admitted to possessing a gun during a traffic stop in Saratoga Springs on Monday, March 25.

Saratoga Springs Police stopped McCall on South Broadway and found a Magnum .357 revolver and ammunition under the driver's seat. Police said McCall was in the backseat of the car and also found heroin, fentanyl, and cocaine in his possession.

Police said McCall had recently been admitted to the Albany County Drug Treatment Court Program, which ended with his arrest. McCall's sentencing to five years in state prison and five years of probation is scheduled for Tuesday, July 30.

DA Karen Heggen said the case is another example of convicted felons traveling to Saratoga Springs with firearms and narcotics. "The unrelenting gun violence in the Capital Region is a stark reminder that these issues impact all of us throughout the area," she said.
