AUSTIN (KXAN) -- On Thursday, the Austin Police Department released surveillance video and a photo of a suspect wanted in connection with a deadly north Austin shooting that happened Wednesday, the agency said in a news release.

Shortly after 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, APD officers responded to the 8500 block of Dryfield Drive after multiple callers reported "a suspect shot someone and left the scene," the release said. Police described that suspect as a Black man, who was wearing a white shirt and black shorts. Furthermore, other callers told police he "went through backyards while trying to leave the area."

Officers arrived on the scene and found a man with "apparent gunshot wounds." He was identified Thursday as Joshua Kozak, 34. Austin-Travis County EMS medics arrived on the scene and "attempted live-saving measures," but Kozak was pronounced dead at 4:30 p.m., according to police.

Police interviewed witnesses and learned Kozak was shot by the suspect and was seen on surveillance video running away, the release said.

If anyone in the 8500 block of Dryfield Drive has video footage in connection with the shooting, they can provide the footage on the APD Evidence Submission Portal website. Police also provided a QR code as an alternate way to provide footage on the City of Austin website.

Anyone who has any other information in connection with the shooting can contact APD at 512-974-TIPS. They can also submit an anonymous tip via the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program website or can call 512-472-8477.

"A reward up to $1,000 may be available for any information that leads to an arrest," police said.

According to police, this is being investigated as Austin's 32nd homicide of 2024.
