There’s no place like home for ANNA’s underground inspiration
WE caught up with Brazilian DJ and producer ANNA – who was fresh from an epic back-to-back set with Carl Cox at Kappa FuturFestival in Turin, Italy last weekend.
She talked us through ten of her favourite tracks from her new Global Underground compilation album GU46: Lisbon which follows on from last year’s definitive GU45: Brooklyn album by Danny Tenaglia in the long running, iconic mix series.
For many years now, ANNA has called Lisbon her home. The city’s music and passion runs deep through her veins. For Lisboetas, ANNA’s trademark sound encapsulates the effortless chic and vibrant nightlife of one of the coolest cities in Europe.
ANNA explains: “I chose music that makes me feel the way that Lisbon makes me feel, and selected the full spectrum of my music taste, including ambient, house and techno. So, there’s this sense of aliveness, of uplifting energy that reflects the diversity of the city…Few places make me feel as stimulated, inspired and fulfilled as Lisbon. It’s a city where I feel totally at home and at peace.”
Listen to ten highlights from GU:46 selected by ANNA and read what she had to say about the music.
Rival Consoles – Recovery –
I have been a fan of this track for years. It constantly inspires me when I am producing my own songs, so I chose it to be the intro for CD1 to set the tone for the entire musical journey.
Nosak Thing – We Are (우리는) ft HYUKOH
One of my favorite tracks from both mixes, this song has been my companion for many long walks along the Tagus River in Lisbon. It has such a fresh vibe, and the production is simply genius.
Bonobo & Jacques Greene – Fold
I had to include Bonobo in my Global Underground compilation because his music perfectly matches the energy of Lisbon and resonates with how I’ve been feeling recently. I’m a huge fan of his work. I also wanted to include tracks from Jacques Greene, but ultimately, “Fold” allowed me to feature the genius of both artists together! Such a dream track!
Parra for Cuva – Mimose
This entire album by Parra for Cuva is incredible; I fell in love with it immediately. I wasn’t sure which track to use for my GU mix, but I chose “Mimose” because it’s one of my favorites and it fit the project perfectly. Our collaboration didn’t end there, we ended up working together more after the Global Underground project, and I even remixed one of the tracks from this album! Thanks Global Underground!
Massano – A World Beyond
Massano has been creating magic recently, and I always have some of his tracks on my playlists. This one is a bit different from his usual peak-time stuff but is just as good! I included it on CD1 because it has a lot of depth, and the main synth line is simply outstanding.
Dense & Pika – Colt (George FitzGerald Remix)
I am a big fan of the original track and have been playing it since it was released. George FitzGerald’s remix added the extra groove I sometimes craved when listening to “Colt”.
Agents Of Time – Zodiac
This was my most played track last year, and I just can’t let go of it! It creates such a beautiful moment on the dance floor, giving me full chills every time I play or listen to it.
Mind Against – OnlyL (feat. TSHA & NIMMO)
I love the original version of this song, and Mind Against did such an amazing remix. I’ve been playing it a lot in my sets, and it is one of my favorite moments. It’s one of my favorite songs right now, both for DJ sets and for listening at home.
ODESZA feat. Julianna Barwick – This Version Of You (Joseph Ray Extended Remix)
I have been listening to ODESSZA soooo much, and this collaboration with Julianna is incredible. I discovered her after listening to her album “In Spirit” wish is also, genius. Joseph’s remix added the perfect beat to the original ..This track is just too good, I also used it on my last “Essential Mix” for BBC Radio 1, so you can see I am a big fan of the song.
Luedji Luna – Banho de Folhas (Maz Remix)
This remix is by a fellow Brazilian and friend who is doing beautiful work right now. It was his first hit, and I love everything about this track, the vibe, the Brazilian vocals, the drums. It feels so good!
