Cameron Hancel, formerly of West Midlands Fire Service, appeared in court on Tuesday charged with wilfully misconducting himself as the holder of a public office

He is also said to have sent messages that were “grossly offensive” in conjunction with the fatal collision.

The alleged incident happened in March 2023.

It is understood that the then-serving firefighter was attending the scene of a fatal car crash.

Court documents state that Hancel, of Rowley Regis, West Midlands, took actions which amounted to “an abuse of the public’s trust.”

The case was sent to Wolverhampton crown court, with a plea and trial preparation scheduled for August 6.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Fire Service said: “Cameron Hancel has not worked for us since August 2023.

“It would be inappropriate for us to comment on an ongoing prosecution.”
