The Major League Baseball trade deadline is now less than three weeks away and talks of buyers/sellers are becoming more prominent. In the 2022 season, the league announced that a new playoff format would be used, including an expanded playoff allowing three wild card spots, which has changed how teams approach the trade deadline.

Heading into Thursday, the National League has six teams within reach of the final wild card, and the American League has two teams within reach. One of those teams is the Houston Astros, who are currently 2.5 games back from the Red Sox for the final playoff spot in the American League.

The Athletic analyst Jim Bowden reported that Houston Astros general manager Dana Brown is determined to find a starting pitcher and a long/short-term answer at first base before the trade deadline. Bowden reports that Brown has spoken with Stearns about the availability of Luis Severino and Pete Alonso, along with Christian Walker from the Diamondbacks, Cody Bellinger from the Cubs, and Andrew Vaughn from the White Sox.

Due to the Mets’ recent success, Bowden reports that Pete Alonso has been taken off the trade market. However, Bowden notes that Stearns may both buy and sell. Stearns could look to add a starting pitcher for depth and continue searching for bullpen arms to help the Mets compete for a playoff spot in the second half of the year.

Heading into Thursday’s game against the Washington Nationals, the Mets are just half a game back with one more series against the Colorado Rockies (33-60) before the all-star break.
