Police chief on paid leave after domestic incident arrest

The chief of the Cambridge-Greenwich Police Department was placed on paid leave after he was arrested in Salem on Wednesday.

CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The chief of the Cambridge-Greenwich Police Department was placed on paid leave after he was arrested in Salem on Wednesday. The Village of Cambridge Board of Trustees said the incident involved Chief Robert Danko, 44, and his estranged wife.

Danko is charged with second degree harassment and second degree unlawful imprisonment. He was arraigned in Washington County and released.

Danko has been with the department for 16 years and was named chief on July 3.

Cambridge Mayor Carman Bogle released the following statement:

"The Village of Cambridge was made aware by Chief Robert Danko of his estranged wife having filed a criminal complaint against him.   In light of the filing of the charge, the Chief has been placed on paid administrative leave so that information can be gathered and reviewed.   The conduct complained of did not occur while the Chief was at work and while this is a private matter between the Chief and his estranged wife, the Village has taken this action so that the legal process can proceed and the Department can continue to operate.  Insomuch as this is a personnel matter, we will not be making any further comment at this time."
