In May, Governor Jeff Landry signed Act 148 requiring restaurants to label if they are using imported products; this comes in a time of need for the seafood industry as cheaper imported products became preferred over locally-caught seafood.

(KLFY) -- Don's Seafood prides itself on providing its customers with fresh Louisiana seafood. Gene Doyle, the service manager, said if you want the best product possible, supporting local is the way to go.

In May, Governor Jeff Landry signed Act 148 requiring restaurants to label if they are using imported products; this comes in a time of need for the seafood industry as cheaper imported products became preferred over locally-caught seafood. Doyle said the new legislation is important because providing the customers with a fresh local product is something to take pride in.

"If you want to have a great reputation and you want to have great pride in the quality of the food you're serving, your guests, you want to make sure you're serving the best product," he said.

James Karst with the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana said Act 148 is a huge step in the direction to restore Louisiana's seafood industry back to normal.

"Louisiana seafood is really a premium product. It's not raised in pools," Karst said. "You know, it's harvested sustainably. It tastes better. It's better. So, we think it's a great step toward helping Louisiana seafood industry."
