Thunderstorms and torrential rain warning issued for UK

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning.

Thunderstorms and torrential rain have been forecast for parts of the UK today.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the south-west of England, covering most of Cornwall and Devon, between 1pm and 9pm.

The forecaster warned that affected areas should expect slow-moving thunderstorms and torrential downpours which could bring disruption to public transport, difficult driving conditions caused by spray and sudden flooding on roads, and power cuts.

Heavy downpours may bring between 15 to 30mm of rain in an hour and as much as 40 to 60mm in several hours for the worst affected areas, along with hail and lightning, the Met Office said.

The showers are expected to slowly ease in the evening.

Much of the rest of England is expected to remain largely dry today, but overcast.

Northern parts of Scotland may see some rain, according to Met Office forecasts.

Tomorrow will be cloudy and cool in the north and east, the forecaster predicts, with some patchy rain.

It’s expected to brighten up elsewhere, though there’s a risk of more heavy showers in south west England as well as Wales.
