With no formal coaching experience- Gautam Gambhir has only worked as a mentor with two IPL franchises-with a professional retirement in 2019, how did Gautam Gambhir become BCCI’s choice as India’s new head coach? The popular belief is that his role in helping KKR celebrate a decade-long waited win in the IPL did the trick. KKR players and support staff were vocal about Gambhir’s role, which is true, but that hardly mattered to the BCCI.

Gambhir being made the head coach had been in work for months. The head coach interview process was nothing but a formality. Also, when BCCI secretary Jay Shah made it clear that India is not keen on having any foreigner as their head coach, the interest among big names was low already.

Gambhir and WV Raman were the only two candidates to appear for an interview with BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee. Both of them impressed the CAC but Gambhir was always miles ahead in the race.

the BCCI saw a man of structure and integrity in Gambhir- along wit the qualifications that were more than the format-specific expertise. Besides, they also did not have any interest in handing over the control to an overseas professional. With VVS Laxman not willing to take the jump and become head coach, the options were limited.

After Duncan Fletcher’s departure about a decade ago, BCCI has maintained its class by appointing big names a head coaches. Anil Kumble, Ravi Shastri and Rahul Drvid were not only big stars due to their playing days, but were also well-respected figured amongst their peers.

Gambhir is likely to add to that list since it was, in fact, one of the understood criteria when BCCI invited applications for the head coach in May.

Before it was made known to the world, the biggest thing to talk about was Gambhir’s interpersonal relationship with some of the players. Gambhir’s testy relationship with Virat Kohli was one such point.

Everyone knows that Rohit Sharma would have surely liked it if Dravid had stayed for just another year, but Dravid wanted to move on. For Rohit, his future being beyond the 2025 World Test championship being difficult to predict, BCCI wanted to offer Gambhir a longer time to provide his services in order to facilitate for the transition.
