Trump could easily screw up his golden opportunity against Biden next week: GOP insider
As Republicans head into their convention Monday, the firing squad of pundits surrounding President Joe Biden may finally have their eyes diverted elsewhere.
Speaking to MSNBC, Brendan Buck, a former senior aide to two former Speakers of the House, warned that Donald Trump is sprinting into the brick wall he's been avoiding for the past year. With the cameras aimed at Trump, his far-right allies, and "Project 2025" for the next week, Buck warned that the stakes are high.
Trump still has yet to formally choose a vice presidential running mate, which Buck called "remarkable" given how late in the game it is.

"Obviously, we heard that it has come down to [Marco] Rubio, [Doug] Burgum and Doug Vance," Buck said, mistakenly calling J.D. Vance Doug. "My sense is that it is going to be someone like Vance because unlike in previous years past, where Donald Trump needed a Mike Pence to unify the party, and make people feel more comfortable, none of that really matters anymore."
He suggested Vance is more capable of describing Trumpism than Trump is. It's a "natural fit," Buck explained.
Doug Burgum would be more of a "governing partner," Buck explained.
What will become a problem, he said, is how Trump goes after Biden.
"I think a lot of Democrats ironically are excited to have everybody turn over to look at Republicans. They want to turn the page from what is going on with Biden," said Buck. "But it is a reminder that a lot of people don't like Donald Trump either."
He said that whoever is the most talked about tends to do the worst. Up until recently, that has been Trump as he struggles with legal woes. Conventions are supposed to rally people around them, both through the base and by showing the country who the candidate is.
The coming week will be "three days, four days of propaganda for why you vote for Donald Trump and not Joe Biden."
The problem is that Trump is a bully, and bullying Biden can work against him, Buck explained.
"Be careful on the age thing. You want to bring it up. You want to score some points, but if you go too far and look like a bully, that could boomerang on you. Nobody likes a bully. They have to be careful in how they raise the Biden age issue."
