I thought my sister’s baby name was a joke – she said it’s better than the ‘basic, boring, grandma names’ my kids have

A HEATED argument was sparked when one woman voiced an opinion on her pregnant sister’s baby’s name.

She was horrified when her sister hit back at her critique with comments about her own kids’ names.

The 36-year-old mom explained on Reddit that she has two daughters named Lillian and Madeline.

Her younger sister, Shaelyn, 24, has “always dreamed” of becoming a mom and is expecting her first child with her fiancé, Anthony, 27.

The couple revealed the name they chose for their baby in the family group chat after initially planning to keep it private.

“Araya Sunshine Heavenly Olivia [last name],” the woman said, posting under the handle Hoosiergal107.

“At first, I thought she was joking.

“She informed me that she was completely serious and that the two of them have had their hearts set on this name ever since they found out they were having a girl.

“I told her that she could name her baby whatever she wanted, but she should consider that she’s not just naming a baby.

“She’s naming a human being that will eventually become an adult, and I think the name would be quite weird for an adult to have.

“Her response was ‘If you don’t like the name, don’t name your kid that!’

“She then proceeded to tell me that her chosen name was much better than the ‘basic, boring, grandma name’  that I named my daughters.”

The woman said her sister called her an “a**hole,” but she’s still convinced the name will bring her niece a “lifetime of bullying and jokes.”

“The child will have Anthony’s last name, which starts with M,” she said.

“Our family’s last name starts with B.

“They plan on Araya Sunshine being the first name, with Heavenly and Olivia as middle names.”

She added that their family doesn’t have an African heritage and she only voiced her opinion after being asked by her sister.

FIRST WORDS

Many Redditors attempted to reassure the woman that she was right to raise concerns about the baby’s name.

“The first name is fine, the middle names are odd and I’d probably pick something else,” one person said.

“You were right to tell her, if she can’t handle criticism then she should have named her kid something boring.”

What does Araya mean?

Data collected by Baby Center shows the name Araya has lost popularity in recent years.

It’s a versatile moniker that can be given to both females and males.

Araya means “a noble, wise king,” according to Mylo Family.

“That is just a ridiculous name for a human being are you kidding?” another said.

“You are in the right and looking out for your niece. She needs to grow up and realize naming her child that is a mistake.”

Other commenters argued the name is unusual but her sister should go ahead with using it.

“Unless she expects that the child will be called by all 4 names every time, the middle names are irrelevant,” one person said.

“And to be fair Araya isn’t that much weirder than Shaelyn, and your sister went through her life with the name and was presumably fine.

“My wife is a teacher and at the start of every school year we go through the class lists and try and figure out how the names will be pronounced and I can tell you Araya is not going to stand out amongst the current school kids.”
