Army & Air Force Exchange Service (Exchange) has teamed up with Discover Global Network to expand the acceptance of and add new technology to its MILITARY STAR card.

With this collaboration, the MILITARY STAR card will be accepted by more on-installation merchants and have fresh technology including EMV® chip technology, tap-to-pay and mobile wallet capabilities, the Exchange said in a Tuesday (July 9) press release emailed to PYMNTS.

“The MILITARY STAR card is a Quality-of-Life force multiplier for service members and families,” Tommy Ward, senior vice president of the Exchange Credit Program, said in the release. “Cardholders expect one card for their lifestyle. This collaboration will strengthen the benefit of using the card.”

The card is currently accepted at Army PXs; Air Force and Space Force BXs; Express convenience stores; Navy, Marine and Coast Guard Exchanges; and commissaries, according to the release.

By moving to the Discover® Global Network, the MILITARY STAR card will be accepted by additional merchants on installations, including concessionaires, name-brand restaurants and third-party vendors, the release said.

“Our collaboration with Army & Air Force Exchange Service is an example of how the Discover Global Network helps enable payment options that best meet the needs of consumers and merchants,” Jason Hanson, president, payment services at Discover, told PYMNTS. “Providing these capabilities to the Army & Air Force Exchange Service, will improve the quality of life of the military community through an enhanced payment product.”

The collaboration enabling greater acceptance will begin in September, with the cards being reissued during the fall, according to the release. In addition to remaining the issuer of the card, the Exchange will retain control and ownership of the Military Star card.

The benefits of the card will remain unchanged, per the release. These include 10% off first-day’s purchases, 5 cents off every gallon of gas at Express fuel locations, 10% off food purchases at participating Exchange restaurants, free standard shipping on orders from ShopMyExchange.com and unlimited 2% rewards everywhere the card is accepted.
