AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin Wildlife Rescue said it welcomed 60 coastal birds Wednesday that were displaced by Hurricane Beryl.

The rescue said it received 30 Mississippi kites and 30 egrets—all of which were baby birds whose nesting and rookery sites were destroyed.

According to Austin Wildlife Rescue, the birds joined the more than 1,600 wild animals currently with the rescue. The estimated budget impact for the care of the wildlife was projected to be approximately $30,000.

"We are committed to providing the best care possible for these vulnerable birds," said Jules Maron, Executive Director of Austin Wildlife Rescue. "The support from the community and the work of our dedicated staff is crucial in ensuring these birds have a chance to thrive and eventually return to their natural habitats."

The rescue said the birds were saved by wildlife organizations in the Houston area.
