Emmy predictions: Which limited series will lead the nominations?

Last year, Netflix had two limited series that took the Emmys by storm — Lee Sung-jin‘s “Beef” and “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” from Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan.

Both were nominated for Best Limited Series (with “Beef”) winning along with five acting nominations each. “Beef” won Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress for Ali Wong while her co-star Steven Yeun took home Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor over “Dahmer” actor Evan Peters.

But how about this year? Which limited series or TV movie will become the most nominated show in its field? Scroll down below for a ranked list of all predicted nominees for Best Limited Series and Best TV Movie. They’re ranked in order of least predicted total nominations to most.

“The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial” (Paramount+ with Showtime) — 1

  • Best TV Movie

  • Best TV Movie

“Scoop” (Netflix) — 1

“Baby Reindeer” (Netflix) — 4

  • Best Limited Series
  • Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor — Richard Gadd

“Lessons in Chemistry” (Apple TV+) — 4

  • Best Limited Series
  • Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress — Brie Larson
  • Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress — Aja Naomi King
  • Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor — Lewis Pullman

“True Detective: Night Country” (HBO) — 4

  • Best Limited Series

“Fargo” (FX) — 6

  • Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor — Jon Hamm
  • Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress — Jennifer Jason Leigh
  • Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor — Joe Keery
  • Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor — Sam Spruell

So, the TV Movie contenders first. We don’t expect many of them to do particularly well. In fact, four out of five them will be confined to Best TV Movie only and only “Mr. Monk’s Last Case” will earn any other nominations. Even then, we only think it will pick up one other bid — Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor for Shalhoub.

We think the Best Limited Series contenders may pick up more nominations, aside from “Ripley,” which we believe will match the same two bids of “Mr. Monk’s Last Case.” “Fargo” is predicted to do the best here by picking up a nomination in each acting category and two nominations for TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor (Keery and Spruell). This is the only series we think will be nominated in every possible category.

“Baby Reindeer,” “Lessons in Chemistry,” and “True Detective: Night Country” are all predicted to pick up the same exact four nominations — Limited Series, a lead acting bid (Gadd/Larson/Foster), and two supporting citations (Gunning and Mau/King and Pullman/Reis and Hawkes).

However, we should note that there is one other limited series that could potentially grab five nominations. FX’s “Feud: Capote vs the Swans” is not predicted to reap a Best Limited Series nomination but we do think it will pick up four other nominations. They are Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress for Naomi Watts, Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor for Tom Hollander, Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress for Diane Lane, and Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor for Treat Williams. So if that series does secure those four acting nominations, which we think it will, and also sneaks into the Best Limited Series lineup, it could land five citations in total.

How about wins? Well, we think “Baby Reindeer” will come away with the most victories with two — Best Limited Series and Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress. We don’t expect any other limited series or TV movie to win more than one prize. Here are our other predicted winners:

  • Best TV Movie — “Mr. Monk’s Last Case”
  • Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress — “True Detective: Night Country” (Foster)
  • Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor — “Fargo” (Hamm)
  • Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor — “The Sympathizer” (Robert Downey Jr.)
