ADD THE SALT

In a now-viral TikTok video, Jimmy Ruttan (@jimmyruttan) explained what he does to keep his food safe while enjoying the wilderness.

First, he fills up his cooler with ice.

You will then want to grab a box of salt.

He suggested pouring about a quarter box of the salt all over the ice.

While he used iodized table salt, he confirmed that any type of food-safe salt, including coarse or rock salts, would still work.

Next, you can throw in your favorite frozen food items.

If you want to try the same brand of salt on your next outdoor outing, Amazon sells Windsor Table Salt which is on sale for $9.95.

FRESHER FOR LONGER

To ensure everything stays fresh, make sure to do this – insulate.

For best results, he suggested using a one-and-a-half-inch rigid foam insulation.

Just repeat this step if you want to keep both refrigerated a nd frozen products safe for consumption.

He explained how his hack can help food last up to six days.

MORE TIPS

Others shared their own tips for preserving food.

“You should do an insulation divider down the middle, right side do the freezer, left side do the fridge, and put the insulation on top still!” said one viewer.

“Use dry ice in the bottom with the insulation on top – the whole thing turns into a freezer,” said a user.

“Salted ice water is a sommelier hack for cooling down bottles very fast,” yet another commented.

Other users also confirmed that ice will give perishable items longevity.

“I work In a fish plant – all the salt ice I want – lasts for days,” said one watcher.

“This! I worked in a fish plant in Alaska and my husband is a fisherman. Cooler full of ice and he’s good for a week,” another chimed in.

Even more people were impressed by the tips.

“Brilliant!” said one user.

“Great idea,” another said.
