Results of a new Datafolha poll show that 29 percent of voters in the city of São Paulo identify themselves as supporters of the left-wing Workers’ Party, of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, while 17 percent are closer to Bolsonarism, the political force led by former President Jair Bolsonaro.

Conversely, 26 percent of respondents said they leaned right, compared to 20 percent who said they leaned left, in a separate question asking them to grade themselves on a scale from 1 (far left) to 7 (far right). The poll was carried out in early July with 1,092 people in Brazil’s largest city. The study’s margin of error was 3 percentage points.

In October, Brazil will elect new mayors and city councilors. According to Datafolha, the São Paulo mayoral race is a 24-23 percent statistical tie between incumbent Ricardo Nunes and Congressman Guilherme Boulos, a Lula-backed leftist.

Mr. Boulos wants to turn the race into a Lula vs. Bolsonaro proxy referendum — hoping to replicate the results of the 2022 presidential runoff, when Lula won in São Paulo city by a 53-46 margin.

Mr. Nunes has catered to the Bolsonaro camp, announcing a running mate that was handpicked by the former president — but he has been more discreet regarding his high-profile backer.

Four other candidates appeared statistically tied in a distant third place: true-crime show host José Luiz Datena (11%), far-right influencer Pablo Marçal (10%), center-left Congresswoman Tabata Amaral (7%), and libertarian economist Maria Helena (5%), who served for less than a year in the Finance Ministry during the former Jair Bolsonaro administration.
