CJ Kayfus Continues to Impress, Juan Benjamin Increases His On-Base Streak to 8 Straight PAs Thursday

Cleveland Guardians minor league recap for Friday, July 12th, 2024

Akron RubberDucks 7, Reading Fightin Phils 2

Box Score · RubberDucks improve to 49-35

The Rubberducks relied on a pair of crooked numbers and a showing on the mound by Parker Messick that would power themselves past the Fightins. Mostly everyone in the lineup contributed one way or another. Dayan Frias and C.J. Kayfus combined for 5 RBIs. More specifically, Kayfus delivered a bases-clearing triple that netted him his three ribbies.

As aforementioned, Parker Messick got back on track from his previous start where he went just 2.2 innings. This time around, he went six strong, allowing 2 runs (both coming from solo shots) on six hits and two walks. He fanned seven, and of course earned himself a quality start. Bradley Hanner and Lenny Torres Jr. handled things from there, shutting down the Phils’ offense with no earned runs allowed.

Lake County Captains 4, Lansing Lugnuts 13

Box Score · Captains move to 51-32

Things were going pretty smoothly for the Captains heading into the 6th. Carter Spivey had just finished his start with 5 IP, 1 ER and 3 Ks while the Caps offense scored 2 in the first off a 2-run little league homer from Alex Mooney.

But, when Omir Santos moved to the bullpen, things started to fall apart. Jake Miller had himself a nightmarish day, giving up 6 ER and 2 bombs. He wasn’t able to make it out of the inning. Then, Adam Tulloch took over and was keeping the Lugnuts’ offense under control until the 9th, where he would also give up a heaping of runs — 5, to be exact.

That being said, Angel Genao did go yard in the 8th for a solo shot, and Jake Fox earlier delivered a sac fly, so things weren’t all too bad for the Lake County lineup.

Lynchburg Hillcats 4, Delmarva Shorebirds 2

Box Score · Hillcats improve to 46-38

Have a day, Juan Benjamin! Juan went 4/4 with two doubles and an RBI. This was his second four-hit game of the year (naturally, the other time was also against Delmarva). Lexur Saduy also had himself a multi-hit game and drove in a run as well.

The pitching staff was excellent Thursday. Dylan DeLucia got the start (3 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 4 K), while Kyle Scott (4 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2 K) got the win and Steven Perez (2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 4 K) earned his 4th save of the year.

F/7 DSL Cleveland Goryl 1, DSL Padres Gold 0

Box Score · DSL Cleveland improves to 18-8

The game was pretty uneventful thanks to a (mostly) quiet Cleveland DSL lineup and a 2-hit gem from Renil Ramos. The only run scored on a Johan Rodriguez sacrifice fly, while Ramos just dealt for 6 of the 7 innings played. His final line: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K. Then, Luilli Cabrera sailed through the 7th for his first save of the DSL season.

The Clippers had both games of their doubleheader against Indiana postponed, one of the games will be made up as part of a doubleheader today (details below).
