Mets Thriving With Runners In Scoring Position

Much has been made about the prolific nature of the Mets’ offense, and for good reason. Much has been made about the prolific nature of the Mets’ offense, and for good reason. The unit is currently batting .249/.320/.417 on the year while tying for the fourth-most home runs (114) and fifth-highest wRC+ (113) in addition to having the eighth-highest OPS (.737).

Those numbers, as has been well-documented, have skyrocketed since the beginning of June. Over that period of time, Mets hitters are responsible for a .271/.339/.480 slash line as the offense has scored a league-leading 206 runs en route to a 23-12 record.

A major factor that has seemingly flown under the radar when discussing the offense’s success, however, is their ability to come up clutch with runners in scoring position. New York’s lineup has hit .275/.361/.476 in those situations with a 139 wRC+, the best mark in the league. Furthermore, the group’s wOBA of .359 also leads all teams while their walk and strikeout rates both rank among the top-half in the league.

With 12 position players on the roster who have tallied a wRC+ of at least 100 with runners in scoring position, 10 of whom are active, this trend has largely developed into a team-wide affair. There are, however, a few names who stand above the rest and have more than pulled their weight when faced with run-producing opportunities.

For instance, Jose Iglesias is batting an absurd .526/.591/.789 during those circumstances, albeit over a small sample size of 22 plate appearances. Meanwhile, Brandon Nimmo ranks third among qualified hitters with a 229 wRC+ while J.D. Martinez comes in at eighth with a 188 wRC+.

The Mets have previously thrived with runners in scoring position under hitting coaches Eric Chavez and Jeremy Barnes, finding themselves within the top-10 in wRC+ in both 2022 and 2023, so their prosperity this season shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. Still, the fact that the offense has continuously risen to the occasion and made the most of their scoring chances bodes well moving forward as they push for a playoff spot.
