Alec Baldwin Scores Victory as 'Rust' Trial Dismissed by Judge, Brought to Tears in Courtroom

Alec Baldwin has scored a massive victory in his Rust trial.

The 66-year-old actor was on trial for the shooting and killing of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the movie Rust in 2021. The gun that Baldwin was holding fired, with the bullet striking and killing Hutchins.

A New Mexico judge decided to dismiss the involuntary manslaughter trial against Baldwin over “critical” bullet evidence that was just introduced into the case.

Baldwin‘s defense team argued that the prosecurtion failed to turn over evidence to them. They said a batch of bullets was deliberately hid from the defense team after being turned over to investigators in March. The bullets had been logged under a different case number, which made it impossible for the defense team to access them. Lead prosecutor Kari Morrissey said she didn’t believe the bullets had evidentiary value.

Special prosecutor Erlinda Johnson resigned from the case amid the revelation and Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer made the decision to toss the case.

“The state is highly culpable for its failure to provide discovery to the defendant,” Marlowe Sommer said (via Variety). “Dismissal with prejudice is warranted.”

Baldwin was joined at the courtroom by his wife Hilaria Baldwin and they left the courthouse together after the ruling was made.
