A 19-year-old East Palo Alto man was arrested Thursday in connection with the incident.

REDWOOD CITY — A 19-year-old East Palo Alto man has been arrested on suspicion of firing a gun during a struggle with bystanders following a hit-and-run collision in Redwood City, authorities said.

The incident happened just before 4:30 p.m. on July 7 in the 100 block of Orchard Avenue, according to the Redwood City Police Department.

Police said the man tried to leave the scene on foot, but he was chased down by bystanders.

The man and several of the bystanders were then involved in a struggle, which ended in a gunshot and the man escaping while brandishing a gun, according to police.

One of the bystanders suffered minor burns from the ejected bullet casing, police said.

Detectives identified the man and obtained a warrant for his arrest. He was also wanted by neighboring law enforcement agencies for other crimes, according to police.

On Thursday, authorities arrested the man at his home. He was booked into Santa Clara County jail on several arrest warrants.
