Sports Briefs: Ellenzweig pitches gem as Twin Cities LL wins in shutout

Twin Cities’ bats heated up as the temperatures cooled down in a 10-0 victory over Napa American in four innings during Friday’s Section One All-Star Tournament opener in Petaluma.

Leo Ellenzweig pitched a one-hitter with three strikeouts and a walk in a commanding effort on the mound for Twin Cities, which advances to the semifinals Sunday at 7 p.m. against either Alameda or Petaluma National.

Twin Cities, sitting on a five-run lead, doubled its run production in the fourth inning. Cooper Peterson hit a grounder to third with two runners on base, but an error allowed him to reach second base as Cole Shambroom and Owen Cordasco scored. Cameron Costa drew a bases-loaded walk for an eight-run lead. Doug Formby then closed the book on the evening with a two-run double.

11s >> Twin Cities got off to a quick start with a pair of runs off bases-loaded walks to Conor Gray and Leo Ellenzweig in the first inning. Cordasco scored on a sacrifice grounder in the second to extend Twin Cities’ lead. Formby came through in the third inning with a double to score Costa, then scored on base hit by Max Reale for a 5-0 lead.

Novato North Little League went through the order in an eight-run second inning to secure an early lead en route to victory over Dixon in Friday’s second-chance game during the Section 1 9-10-11 All-Star Tournament at American Canyon.

Aggressive baserunning and Dixon’s pitching woes combined to keep Novato moving. Cyrus Bentaleb led off the bottom of the first with double, then scored on a single up the gap by Enzo Martinelli, who then scrambled to third base on an error. Brody Von Behren’s RBI single staked Novato to a 2-0 lead.

Novato kept the momentum rolling in the second inning. After Novato scored twice, an RBI single from Bentaleb and and RBI-double by Ian Bowman pushed the lead to 6-0, but Novato wasn’t done yet. Bentaleb and Bowman both scored on wild pitches. Von Behren crushed an RBI double to left center, then stole third and eventually scored on a wild pitch for a 10-0 lead.

12s >> Mill Valley got one the board first, but couldn’t hold on to a narrow lead, eventually falling to Alameda, 4-1, in Friay’s opening round of the Section 1 Tournament at Hall Memorial Park in Dixon. Rory Murphy scored from third on a wild pitch with two outs in the top of the third inning to give Mill Valley a one-run lead over Alameda.

Mill Valley missed a few chances to add to its lead. But with Oscar Karlen in a solid effort on the mound, Mill Valley looked like it might make the lead hold up as Alameda was scoreless through four innings.

Mill Valley is scheduled to play either Petaluma American or Vacaville National in an elimination game on Saturday.

Golf

Mill Valley’s Ben Friedman shot an even-par 216 to finish in a six-way tie for sixth place Thursday in the IMG Academy Junior World Championships at Torrey Pines South Course in La Jolla. Friedman wrapped up the third day of the tournament with a 1-under 71, highlighted by five birdies on the challenging course.

Friedman was just three strokes off the winning pace set by Altadena’s Logan Kim, who tied for 14th place at the CIF State Championship at San Gabriel Country Club in May. Friedman and his Tam High teammate tied for 17th at state.

Boys basketball

Archie Williams, Marin Catholic and Novato are scheduled to compete in the Mustang Summer Jam at St. Vincent de Paul in Petaluma on Saturday and Sunday. Each of the 12 teams in the tournament plays two games each day.
