Suspected crossbow attacker Kyle Clifford underwent surgery for a self-inflicted stab wound, it’s been claimed.

He was arrested earlier this week on suspicion of murdering BBC racing commentator John Hunt’s wife and two daughters in a horrific crossbow attack.

He is accused of killing Carol Hunt, 61, and sisters Hannah, 28, and Louise, 25, in what police called a targeted attack.

The 26-year-old was tracked to a cemetery in Enfield, north London, on Wednesday afternoon, and has remained in hospital in a serious condition since.

The Guardian reported that the 26-year-old has undergone emergency surgery for a chest wound he inflicted upon himself.

Police have been unable to speak with Clifford as he recovers in hospital, but he was arrested in his hospital bed yesterday.

In a statement released on Saturday, Hunt and his older daughter Amy said: ‘The devastation that we are experiencing cannot be put into words.

‘We would like to thank people for their kind messages and for the support we have received in recent days. These have provided great comfort to us for which we are very grateful.

‘As you can imagine, this is an extremely difficult time for us, and we need time and space to come to terms with what has happened and start the grieving process.

‘While this is happening, we would ask that our privacy and that of our wider family and relations be respected at this time. Thank you.’

Mr Hunt was said to have returned home from work to discover the scene on Ashlyn Close in Bushey, Hertfordshire, on Tuesday evening.

Detective Superintendent Rob Hall, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Major Crime Unit, said: ‘Our thoughts remain with the victims’ family at this tragic time.

‘The investigation is moving at pace and as a result, we have now arrested a man. Enquiries are continuing at this time.’
