Missing Daniel Halliday, 14, confirmed dead after body found in search for teen who vanished while playing in river

MISSING 14-year-old Daniel Halliday has tragically been confirmed dead after his body was found in a river.

Police were told that the body of a boy had been discovered by HM Coastguard on the evening of July 8 in the River Mersey at New Brighton.

Officers said that after “extensive forensic examinations”, the boy has been formally identified as Daniel Halliday.

Daniel had been reported to have been jumping waves with his brother in Crosby at 7pm on Sunday 30 June before getting into difficulty. 

The teenager was lost to a strong current in the River Mersey despite his older brother trying to save him, his family said.

Emergency services were called to Crosby beach at around 7pm on June 30 to mount a search.

A body was found by the Coastguard off New Brighton on Monday night.

The teenager’s family had described him as a “loving son, brother, cousin, nephew and grandson”.

Merseyside Police are supporting his family following the tragic loss.

His death is being treated as not suspicious.

The case was referred to the coroner’s office.
