Pakistani media outlets reported that border forces of the country detained and handed over 120 Afghanis to the Taliban.

According to the Pakistani newspaper Dawn, the border forces of the country detained and handed over 120 Afghan citizens to the Taliban on Friday, July 12th.

According to the report, these individuals were apprehended at the Pakistan-Afghanistan and Pakistan-Iran borders for illegally entering Pakistan.

Pakistani authorities stated that security forces initiated joint operations upon receiving intelligence about suspected foreign nationals in border areas, resulting in the detention of 120 Afghan men.

In recent months, Pakistan has expelled tens of thousands of Afghan migrants from the country and returned them to Afghanistan. This marks a continuation of Pakistan’s policy towards Afghan migrants, particularly those without proper documentation.

Filippo Grandi, the head of the UN Refugee Agency, announced the suspension of the Afghan repatriation program from Pakistan at the end of his three-day visit to Peshawar and Islamabad four days ago. However, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has denied these claims, asserting the program’s ongoing status.

The Pakistani government officially began the first phase of expelling undocumented Afghan nationals in the fall of last year.

According to official statistics, 541,000 Afghan migrants were expelled from Pakistan during this phase alone.

According to official statements by Taliban authorities, the second phase of the Afghan refugee expulsion process aims to return 800,000 undocumented migrants to Afghanistan.

This move underscores ongoing efforts to regulate migration and address security concerns along Pakistan’s borders.

Amid a dire humanitarian crisis in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, returnees face numerous challenges upon their return, including a lack of proper shelter, employment opportunities, food, and basic necessities.
