Another player has left Tottenham Hotspur this summer, with a young academy graduate securing a permanent transfer to the Netherlands after a successful loan spell last season.

Troy Parrott returns to the Eredivisie

Spurs are trimming the fat in their squad, it seems, and the latest casualty of that is Troy Parrott. The club has today confirmed the young striker has made the permanent switch to AZ Alkmaar in Holland.

In a statement on his exit, the club wrote: “We have reached agreement with Dutch Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar for the permanent transfer of Troy Parrott.

“Having joined us in July, 2017, Troy progressed from the Club’s Academy into the first team to make his competitive debut in September, 2019, in a Carabao Cup tie against Colchester United, with his Premier League debut following shortly after.

“The Dublin-born attacker made four competitive senior appearances in our colours.

“During his time here, he had loan spells with Millwall, Ipswich, MK Dons, Preston and Dutch outfit Excelsior last season.

“The forward has 23 caps and five goals to his name for the Republic of Ireland.

“We wish Troy all the best for the future.”

Fabrizio Romano already discussed the transfer on July 12, revealing Alkmaar were closing in on an €8m (£6.7m) deal after raising funds from the sale of Yukinari Sugawara to Southampton.

Alasdair Gold at Football.London backed this up, by revealing on Friday Parrott was on his way to Holland to carry out a medical ahead of the transfer.

Parrott had been the subject of interest from various Eredivisie sides already this summer, with AZ Alkmaar among them (Algemeen Dagblad via FC Update).

Spurs insider, Paul O’Keefe, had confirmed recently that a bid from Alkmaar was expected imminently and this may be why Parrott had not been training with the Tottenham first-team upon their return to pre-season at the club’s Hotspur Way training facility.

Parrott can pick up where he left off in the Netherlands

The Irish striker spent last season on loan with Excelsior Rotterdam, scoring 17 goals across the campaign (Transfermarkt) but was unable to stop them from being relegated from the Eredivisie.

Parrott himself has spoken of his fondness for the league there and how he feels his playing style suits the Dutch top flight (Balls.ie).

Spurs Web Opinion

It’s always a shame to see an academy player move on, but the route to the first-team at Spurs has been severely blocked for Parrott, and he had hit the point where he needed a transfer. He did great over in the Netherlands last season, and should be able to replicate that in a better team now.
