Bakari Sellers says Rubio Trump’s best bet for VP pick

Former South Carolina state Rep. Bakari Sellers (D) said Friday that he thinks Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) is former President Trump’s best option for vice president.

Sellers, also a CNN commentator, joined “Real Time with Bill Maher” Friday to discuss the upcoming Republican National Convention (RNC) and the highly anticipated running mate announcement from Trump.

Among the top rumored candidates are Rubio, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) and Gov. Doug Burgum (R-N.D.).

“I would say that the only person who poses any fear for Democrats is probably Marco Rubio,” Sellers said.

Sellers argued that Rubio, who has held his seat in the Senate since 2011, looks like the future and has a lot of experience.

As a Cuban American, Sellers said Rubio can appeal to Hispanic voters in ways that Trump can’t.

“He’s a notable opponent against Kamala Harris in the debate,” Sellers said.

Sellers argued Burgum and Vance do not give Democrats cause for concern. Vance, he added, "stands for nothing."

Sellers's comments come as the former president drags out the suspense over who he will choose as his running mate. Trump has said in recent days that he would announce his pick during the RNC’s Milwaukee convention, which begins Monday.

The former president said in late June he already made his mind up with regards to his pick. Since then he's gone back and forth — suggesting on some occasions his mind is more or less made up, and at others indicating he's still deciding.

Sources close to the former president, including his son Donald Trump Jr., say they don’t even know who it will be.

"I have no inside information, obviously," Trump Jr. said during a recent episode of his podcast "Triggered."
