TN Prohibition Amendment Act, 2024 comes into force

Chief Minister M K Stalin announced the implementation of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition Amendment Act, 2024, aimed at addressing the serious issue of illicit liquor. Following the tragic incident in Kallakurichi where over 60 deaths occurred due to methanol-laced liquor, the amended Act was passed unanimously by the state assembly and received assent from Governor R N Ravi. The new legislation introduces harsher penalties, including life imprisonment for bootleggers in cases resulting in fatalities, and significantly increases fines to deter the manufacture, possession, and sale of illicit alcohol.
