One year!

That was the time Andrew Sylvester Moore was sentenced to prison for his most recent theft.

As Magistrate Allison Burke informed him in the District “A” Traffic Court yesterday of his fate, he groaned: “Cheeezzzz! I gine jail?”

Moore, who is 49 and homeless, confessed to stealing a bag, three T-shirts, a beach pants, one Lenova laptop, a pair of headphones and $30, belonging to Jamar Hall, on July 7. He had asked for a bond to keep the peace instead of jail time.

Prosecutor Constable Ralph Rollock had told the court the complainant owns a food truck which operates at Savvy On The Bay, Bay Street, St Michael. On the date, he parked and got out of his car, leaving the driver’s side door open. He went into the truck before returning to his vehicle and driving home. When he reached home and looked for his

laptop, it was nowhere to be found.

Hall then messaged his employees, who confirmed that he had left it in the back seat of his car. So, he returned to Savvy On The Bay and checked cameras in the area. That was when he saw Moore removing the laptop from his car.

When police caught up with Moore on Tuesday, he confessed during an interview that he took the items, sold them for $50 and bought food and cocaine with the funds.

That story changed slightly yesterday, when he told Magistrate Burke he sold the items to someone in Nelson Street for $100, but “I doan use dope”, as he insisted he only bought food with the money he received.

“Your last conviction was on the 13th of March, before me. You need to leave people’s things alone. Things are hard enough out there without you stealing people’s things . . . . From 1992

until 2024 is a long time,” she told Moore, who has 47 previous convictions, most of which are for theft.

None of the items stolen last Sunday was recovered.
