2024 Emmy Experts predict Best Animated Program: ‘X-Men ’97’ takes the lead

Having trouble predicting what will win Best Animated Program at the upcoming Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s 2024 Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their predictions, and the majority of them believe the trophy will go to Disney Plus’ “X-Men ’97.” The other potential nominees, per the Experts’ current racetrack odds, are Fox’s “The Simpsons,” Adult Swim’s “Rick and Morty,” Fox’s “Bob’s Burgers” and Netflix’s “Blue Eye Samurai.”

As of this writing, five out of our nine Emmy Experts predict a victory for “X-Men ’97”: Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Clayton Davis (Variety), Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby) and Shawn Edwards (WDAF-TV Fox). This new show serves as a revival of the popular “X-Men: The Animated Series” that ran between 1992 and ’97. In particular, Lenore Zann as Rogue has been singled out for her work in the emotional episode “Remember It.”

The remaining four Emmyologists — Ben Travers (Indiewire), Matt Roush (TV Guide Magazine), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby) and Susan King (Gold Derby) — instead believe “The Simpsons” will prevail. Fox’s long-running classic about the yellow inhabitants of Springfield has been nominated in this race a whopping 32 times over the decades, winning a total of 12, with the most recent victory coming last year for the “Treehouse of Horror XXXIII” episode.

Our pundits collectively have “Rick and Morty” in third place. This sci-fi sitcom from the minds of Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon is a four-time nominee for Best Animated Program and a two-time winner (2020 and ’18). The most recent seventh season about the hijinks of the grandfather-and-grandson duo aired from October to December of 2023.

Also looking strong in our Experts’ rankings is “Bob’s Burgers.” The animated hit about a quirky family who runs a burger joint has earned 12 bids through the years in this category, taking home a pair of trophies (2017 and ’14). The 14th season concluded in May, with a 15th cycle in production, making “Bob’s Burgers” one of Fox’s longest-running series of all time.

Some of the most recent Emmy winners in the Best Animated Program category include “The Simpsons” in 2023 and ’19, “Arcane” in 2022, “Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal” in 2021, “Rick and Morty” in 2020 and ’18, and “Bob’s Burgers” in 2017.
