TRADITIONAL RULERS PROMISE TO SUPPORT SANWO-OLU
… Assures Continued Peace in Lagos
Traditional Rulers in Lagos State recently reiterated their commitment to continuously support the administration of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu in the development agenda of Lagos State and in Making Lagos State a 21st Century Economy.
They made this pledge at a three-day Retreat for Traditional Rulers organised by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development held recently in Epe, Lagos.
The Traditional Rulers, who affirmed their support for the present administration, also appealed that the State Government should continue to involve Traditional Rulers in governance.
In his keynote address at the opening ceremony, the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Tayo Ayinde, reiterated the State Government’s commitment to the welfare of Traditional Leaders, assuring that the State would continue to engage them in its efforts to ensure continuous social development, peace and prosperity.
Mr. Governor commended Traditional Rulers for the crucial role they play in helping the Government understand better the impact of governance on the people. He stated that his administration will continue to support and enable Traditional Rulers to keep making meaningful contributions to the development of the State, especially in the areas of security and welfare.
Speaking in the same vein, Chairman, House Committee on Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Hon. Sanni Okanlawon reiterated the key roles Traditional Rulers play in governance in ensuring peaceful co-existence and harmonious relationships amongst diverse people residing in their domains.
He revealed that it is in consideration of their important roles that the present administration is involving traditional rulers in governance towards sustaining the peace and progress that Lagos State enjoys.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Mr. Bolaji Kayode Robert thanked Mr. Governor for his inclusive policy which has allowed Traditional Rulers to contribute to the development of the State through their wisdom and rich experience.
He explained that the retreat is an opportunity for the State Government and Traditional Rulers to have robust interfaces and interactions on how they can have conversations on ways to maintain the peace in Lagos State. He added that it is important for traditional institutions as stakeholders to be aware and equipped with adequate knowledge that will assist in conflict resolutions and the promotion of peaceful co-existence in their domains and by extension, Lagos State.
The Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Kikelomo Bolarinwa also applauded the unrelenting efforts of Mr. Governor in prioritising Traditional Institutions in the State which has engendered ease in the discharge of their roles as Traditional Rulers.
The three-day retreat themed: “Traditional Rulers: Anchors in Times of Social Crisis”, was attended by Honourable Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Special Adviser to the Governor on Rural Development, Dr. Nurudeen Agbaje and other top government officials in the State.
