The scene in question finds Katy and her dancers delivering some sexy choreography on the set of a construction site. There’s also some product placement and cheeky moments before the pop star is “smashed” by an anvil and reemerges in a new costume.

“We’re kind of just having fun, being a bit sarcastic with it,” she explained in a video shared on Instagram. “It’s very slapstick and very on the nose.”

Katy continued, saying, “With this set it’s like, ‘Oooh, we’re not about the male gaze, but we really are about the male gaze.’ And we’re really overplaying it and on the nose.”

The anvil was a moment to “reset” that helped her embrace the “idea of feminine divine.”

“We wanted to open this video making it look like a super high-gloss pop star video,” Katy added, saying that they definitely achieved that.

“Woman’s World” introduced Katy‘s new album 143, which arrives on 20. Find out the deeper meaning of the title.
