Donald Trump said he felt a bullet ‘rip through his skin’ after an assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania left one person dead and two critically injured.

The former US president was speaking on stage at the event in Butler, about 33 miles north of Pittsburgh, on Saturday evening when he was shot live on television.

The 78-year-old said he ‘knew immediately something was wrong’ after hearing a ‘whizzing sound and shots’, adding the bullet ‘pierced the upper part of my right ear’.

Trump added that ‘nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead.’

One person visiting the rally has been killed while two other spectators have been left injured, the Secret Service has said.

It being investigated as an assassination attempt.

Law enforcement officials told reporters they had tentatively identified a suspected shooter but were not ready to do so publicly. They also said they not yet identified a motive.

The attack is the most serious attempt to assassinate a president or presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981.
