Buttó, Núñez Hold Rockies In 7-3 Win

It was the battle of the purple jerseys at Citi Field between the New York Mets and The Colorado Rockies on Saturday afternoon. In a rare sight, the Mets bullpen, mainly José Buttó and Dedniel Núñez, was flawless after a shaky outing from Christian Scott. They kept the Rockies at bay as they were mounting a comeback, and the Mets eventually pulled away thanks to a Francisco Lindor three-run home run as New York notched a 7-3 win.

Butto & Núñez Sharp Out Of The Bullpen

After the Mets gave Scott a 4-0 lead, the teams’ young starter had trouble with control and the long ball. Scott gave up two home runs, a solo home run by Jake Cave in the 3rd and a two-run home run by Charlie Blackmon in the 5th. After Ezequiel Tovar singled and Ryan McMahon walked, Carlos Mendoza went to Buttó with 1-out in the 5th inning. Buttó would get Elias Díaz to ground into a double play to get out of the jam and preserve a Mets 4-3 lead. From there, Buttó shut the Rockies out in the 6th and 7th innings. Mendoza sent him back out there for the 8th.

In the 8th inning, however, Buttó gave up a single and a walk. Mendoza would bring in Núñez to face Díaz. Like Buttó, Núñez got the Rockies catcher to ground into a double play. He got Brenton Doyle to pop out to end the inning and then followed that by striking out the side in the 9th inning to close out the win.

Combined, Buttó and Núñez allowed just one hit and struck out eight. For the Mets, they’ve been solid additions to their bullpen.

Lindor Strikes Again

The Mets were barely hanging on to a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the 8th inning. They had other chances to score and left guys on base throughout the game. With Luis Torrens and Ben Gamel on base with 2-outs, Lindor hit a key three-run home run to deep center field to give the Mets some insurance. That home run gave the Mets and Núñez the breathing room they needed to secure the win. Lindor got on base three times for the second consecutive game, and his home run was another big hit for the Mets shortstop.

Player Of The Game: Francisco Lindor

Lindor’s home run in the 8th inning provided the big spark on offense the Mets needed on Saturday to get the win. It was Lindor’s 17th home run of the season. Additionally, Lindor got on base three times for the second consecutive game. As well as notching his 18th stolen base of the season. It was another fine day for the Mets shortstop.

On Deck

The Mets will close out the first half of the season on Sunday afternoon as Jose Quintana takes the mound. The Rockies will send Germán Márquez to the mound as he will make his 2024 season debut. The game will be telecast locally on SNY at 1:40 p.m. EDT and broadcast on WCBS Radio 880.
